One thing that I’ve often thought could help this episode avoid the telegraphing of the twist would be actually pretty simple, and already kind of baked into the setup. With the psychological indoctrination that Chakotay was getting, remember that he even saw Tuvok as “the nemesis” initially. It could be revealed that the psych training makes Chakotay see anyone not aligned with “the good guys” as the monstrous nemesis.
If, from the start, we saw the ambassador that Voyager was speaking with and they appeared to be the same race that Chakotay was interacting with, or close enough that the difference wouldn’t be obvious, that would have better hidden the twist.
However, it would also have removed the whole “look fairer and feel fouler” idea where the more monstrous looking beings are actually more friendly. When I come across issues like this, I take a look at what message they prioritized at the expense of the other and I just figure that was the MAIN point, and anything else is ancillary.
